The modern Bentley Flying Spur embodies a rich legacy that dates back to the esteemed H.J. Mulliner coachbuilders. In 1957, Mulliner revolutionised luxury automotive design by introducing a four-door silhouette to the Continental chassis, resulting in the iconic Continental Flying Spur. The 1958 model, now a prized piece of the Heritage Collection, offered bespoke elegance and swift journeys for its distinguished owners until Bentley Motors acquired it in 2004. Since 2005, Bentley has meticulously crafted the Flying Spur as a premier four-door luxury limousine, leveraging the same exceptional platform as the Continental GT. This unwavering dedication has cemented the Flying Spur’s position as Bentley’s flagship masterpiece, epitomising unparalleled sophistication and performance.
The first Bentley Flying Spur was introduced in 1957 as a four-door version of the Bentley Continental. It was based on the Bentley S1 saloon and featured a handcrafted body by H.J. Mulliner. The original Flying Spur was powered by a 6.2-liter V8 engine, offering impressive performance and luxurious comfort.
After a long hiatus, Bentley reintroduced the Flying Spur name in 1994 with the Bentley Continental Flying Spur. This new model was based on the Bentley Continental R coupe and featured a turbocharged 6.75-litre V8 engine. The Flying Spur II received various updates throughout its production run, including cosmetic enhancements and improved technology.
In 2005, Bentley unveiled an all-new Flying Spur model, marking a departure from the Continental prefix. The modern Flying Spur shares its platform with the Bentley Continental GT and features a more contemporary design. It offers a range of powerful engines, including W12 and V8 options, along with advanced technologies and luxurious amenities and offered the very best and latest in technology for the time.
The second-generation Bentley Flying Spur was introduced in 2013. It showcased a more refined design, incorporating Bentley’s latest design language. The car featured a twin-turbocharged 6.0-litre W12 engine, providing exceptional power and performance. The second-generation Flying Spur also introduced new features like an eight-speed automatic transmission, adaptive suspension, and a variety of customization options.
The current and third-generation Bentley Flying Spur was unveiled in 2019. It represents a significant leap forward in terms of design, technology, and performance. The new Flying Spur features a sleeker exterior design with sharper lines and a more muscular stance. It boasts a twin-turbocharged 6.0-litre W12 engine, delivering immense power and acceleration.
